In NYC, there's an annual event called the Great Saunter, in which people walk around the entire perimeter of Manhattan, about 32 miles, in a single day. I loved the idea when I heard about it, but there's no way I would be able to do it in one day, or at least enjoy doing it. So! I decided to do it in parts - about 4 miles at a time, over the course of several weekends.

I started at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, and ended the first day at Pier 57 (approximately 14th Street). This is an area I've spent a lot of time around already, but there was a lot I hadn't seen (or at least, noticed) before!
On the second day, I went from Pier 57 up to 72nd Street. The first day was pretty built-up and touristy, and this stretch is for most of it too. Once I got up around 60th Street, it very quickly started getting greener and quieter.
On the third day, I went from 72nd street up to 125th street. A stretch of the waterfront path here was blocked off for construction, so much of this was along an elevated portion of Riverside Park.
It... rained a lot! For the record, it wasn't raining much when I started - by the time the rain got bad, I was already pretty far 😅
The fourth day, and the last before I paused for winter, I went from 125th Street to Dyckman Street, at the top of Fort Tryon Park. Stretches of this walk were also closed off for construction, but some parts were right along the water (including an adorable little lighthouse!)
Once it started getting warmer again, I started back up at Dyckman Street on the west side, looping around the top of Manhattan and ending up at 155th Street on the east side. Did you know that after you enter the east side waterfront walkway at Dyckman Street, there's no way to cross back over Harlem River Drive until you reach 155th Street? I didn't!
Looping around the top of the island was pretty neat - from under the Henry Hudson Bridge, I could see a small bit of land poking into the water in the distance, and when I looped around to that bit of land, I could see the spot I had just been a little while ago.
I also found a cute area called, of all things, "Swindler Cove" - right before getting stuck on the river side of Harlem River Drive for the next almost 50 blocks :)
On the sixth day, I went from 155th Street to 96th Street. A lot of this was away from the water, at times quite a bit inland! Some sections were under construction, and some just didn't offer riverfront access at all. There was some interesting art along this stretch though!
On the penultimate walk, I went from 96th Street to 35th Street. There were some inland stretches, especially around the UN.
The final stretch! I went from 35th Street to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal - where I started back in September. I haven't spent as much time on this side as on the west side, but this was definitely back in relatively familiar territory. Still saw some things I hadn't noticed before!
